Footwell Module (FRM) Repair in Surrey — Lights, Windows & Indicators Back On
Flat battery or jump start left your BMW or Mini with dead windows, no indicators and lights doing their own thing? That’s the footwell module. We repair your original unit with all its coding intact — no dealer replacement, no programming bill — at your door across Surrey.
What the footwell module does — and why it fails
Tucked behind the kick panel in the driver’s footwell, the FRM is the computer that runs your car’s body electrics: headlights and indicators, electric windows, mirror controls, interior lights and door contacts. BMW fitted one to most models from the mid-2000s — 1 Series, 3 Series, X1, Z4 — and the same unit lives in Minis of the same era.
Its weakness is well known: a flat battery, a jump start or a battery change at the wrong moment can corrupt the module’s stored software mid-write. The electronics themselves are usually undamaged — the module is simply left with scrambled data, which is why so many “dead” FRMs are perfectly repairable.
The symptoms drivers describe
Electric windows that won’t move. Indicators completely dead. Headlights stuck on or refusing to come on. Interior lights out, mirrors frozen, warning messages about exterior lamps. It usually all happens at once, straight after a battery problem — the giveaway that it’s the FRM rather than a dozen separate faults. We confirm it with proper diagnostics before any work, so you’re never guessing.
Repair, not replacement — keep your original coding
The dealer answer is a new module, plus coding to your car, plus the wait for it all to be booked in. Our answer is to rebuild the software on your own unit at bench level. Your FRM keeps its identity — the coding, settings and pairing it has always had — so it plugs straight back in and everything simply works again. No new-part bill, no programming charge, and typically done the same day.
At your door, or collect and return
We come to you anywhere in Surrey, remove the module, rebuild it and refit it on the spot. If the car’s laid up somewhere else, you can drop the unit to us or post it in and we’ll turn it around fast. It’s the same specialist electronics work behind our instrument cluster repair, immobiliser & module repair and ECU cloning services — this is the niche we live in.

Footwell Module Repair — frequently asked questions
What is a footwell module?
It’s the body-electronics computer BMW and Mini fit low down in the driver’s footwell — the FRM. It runs the exterior lights, indicators, electric windows, mirrors and door contacts. When it fails, all of those can stop at once.
Why did mine fail after a flat battery or jump start?
It’s the classic cause. A voltage dip or spike — flat battery, jump start, or a battery change part-way through — can corrupt the module’s stored software, and the FRM stops responding. The hardware underneath is usually fine, which is exactly why repair works.
Which vehicles have a footwell module?
Most BMWs from the mid-2000s onwards — 1 Series, 3 Series, X1, Z4 and others — plus the same generations of Mini. Other makes use similar body control modules, which we also repair. Tell us the make and model and we’ll confirm.
Can the module really be repaired rather than replaced?
Yes, in the vast majority of cases. We rebuild the corrupted software on your original unit at bench level, so there’s no need for a new module. If a unit ever is beyond saving, we’ll tell you straight and quote the alternative before any work starts.
Will it need coding at a dealer afterwards?
No — that’s the point of repairing your original module. Your car’s own coding and settings are preserved, so the unit plugs back in and everything works as it did before the fault. There’s no dealer visit and no programming bill.
My windows, indicators and interior lights all stopped together — is that the FRM?
That combination is the signature FRM fault, especially right after a flat battery or jump start. We confirm it with proper diagnostics first, so you’re never paying to fix the wrong thing.
How long does it take, and do you come to me?
We’re mobile across Surrey — we come to your home or workplace, remove the module, rebuild it and refit it, usually the same day. You can also drop the unit to us or post it in if the car is off the road elsewhere.
What if my module is completely dead?
If the unit can’t be revived we can supply a replacement and program it to your car, keeping your keys and settings working — still far cheaper than the dealer route. We’ll always give you a fixed price for the best option before going ahead.
